pgquery

Free PostgreSQL client · runs in your browser

Paste a connection string. Start querying.

pgquery is a free, open-source PostgreSQL client in your browser: SQL editor, table editor, ER diagram, RLS policies, EXPLAIN viewer and advisors. One Docker container, no account.

Works with any Postgres you can reach: Supabase, Neon, RDS or your own server. Or look around a read-only sample store first.

pgquery is ours, so the gaps are listed as carefully as the strengths. Full comparison with CloudBeaver and Adminer, or vs DBeaver.

Where pgquery wins

  • More than a query explorer: RLS policies, roles, indexes, functions, triggers, extensions and settings, which pgweb doesn’t cover.
  • Postgres-specific depth DbGate doesn’t focus on: Row Level Security, performance and security advisors, pg_stat_statements.
  • EXPLAIN ANALYZE as a tree that points at the slowest node and flags bad row estimates.
  • Small and stateless: one container with a Go binary, nothing stored on the server.

Where pgquery loses

  • No SSH tunnels. pgweb, DbGate, pgAdmin and CloudBeaver connect through a bastion host where pgquery cannot.
  • No login of its own. pgweb has basic auth, DbGate, pgAdmin and CloudBeaver have accounts; pgquery needs a VPN or an auth proxy.
  • PostgreSQL only. DbGate, CloudBeaver and Adminer also speak MySQL, SQLite, SQL Server and more.
  • No backup / restore, CSV import or schema diff. DbGate and pgAdmin have them, and DbGate previews even row edits as SQL.

Questions

What is pgquery?

A free, open-source PostgreSQL GUI that runs in your browser: SQL editor, table editor, ER diagram, RLS policies, roles, indexes, an EXPLAIN plan viewer and performance and security advisors.

Is it really free?

Yes. MIT licensed, no paid tier, no account.

Where are my connection strings stored?

In your browser's localStorage. The proxy forwards each query and keeps nothing.

How do I self-host it?

Run docker run -p 54280:54280 ghcr.io/hxndrik/pgquery and open http://localhost:54280.

Does it work with RDS, Supabase, Neon or a VPS?

Yes. Any PostgreSQL server the container can reach over the network.

How is it different from pgweb?

pgweb is a lean, mature query explorer shipped as one binary, with SSH tunnels. pgquery adds the administration side (RLS policies, roles, indexes, functions, triggers, extensions, settings), advisors, a visual EXPLAIN tree and an ER diagram; it has no SSH tunnels yet.

Is pgquery related to the pg_query parser library?

No. pg_query by pganalyze is a Postgres query parser for developers; pgquery is a database GUI.
